New Hanover County is pleased to announce that, beginning July 1, 2018, food waste will be accepted for composting at the landfill facility. The composting program consists of an innovative in-vessel system designed to eliminate odors and wastewater issues typically associated with composting operations.
Food waste and other compostable materials make up nearly half of all waste disposed of in landfills. Decomposing food waste in the landfill generates methane gas, which is a greenhouse gas that is much more potent than carbon dioxide.
Nutrient-rich compost is an effective soil amendment that adds beneficial nutrients to soil, such as nitrogen and carbon, while helping the soil to retain moisture and loosens hard-packed soils.
