The Department of Environmental Management is working steadily towards implementation of two new recycling programs:
Material Recovery Facility (MRF) – A material recovery facility, or MRF (pronounced “murf”) is taking shape at the former Wastec facility. The Department’s partnership with Sonoco Recycling, LLC, will add a critical piece of recycling infrastructure to our community. The MRF is where recyclables, like cans, bottles, plastic containers, cardboard, and paper will be processed, baled, and marketed. The facility will house processing equipment designed to separate the materials efficiently, remove contamination, and ensure the quality of the material prior to shipping. This facility is scheduled to come online in late November, 2015.
Construction & Demolition (C&D) Debris Recycling Facility – The C&D recycling facility will accept waste generated during new construction, demolition, and remodeling projects, and keep it out of the landfill by recycling materials such as wood, gypsum wallboard, carpet, asphalt shingles, scrap metal, and masonry. The facility will be sited at the New Hanover County landfill on a new 28,500 square foot concrete pad and will house a processing line designed to separate the materials by type. This facility is scheduled to come online in late December, 2015.
